For those of you avidly following the progress of the renovation of the church clock, here is the latest update. You may have missed the intervening reports since they were published on the old web page.
The Hour strike was repaired first and now the quarter chimes have been completed. We will leave these to settle down for a while and make sure they are working properly, then we will tackle the last phase of the repairs which will be the clock itself, or as it is known in horology circles, the going. We think this will be in a week or two, but while this is happening there will be no quarters or hour strikes since the clock that drives them will be stopped. Hopefully this won’t last too long, say 2-3 weeks. In its present state, the clock does tend to loose time over the week, and if not corrected swiftly could be as much as 4-5 minutes. This will all be rectified when we refurbish the going. Some of you may also have noted the long gap between the end of the quarters which mark the hour and the striking of the hours (a bit like Big Ben but longer – about 25 secs. gap) We are aware of this and hope to rectify when the whole thing is put back together again. I hope you agree the refurbished and new parts of the clock look very smart. MS
